Robert Menasse was born in Vienna in 1954. He studied German language and literature, philosophy and political science. After completing his doctorate, he taught as a guest lecturer at the Institute for Literary Theory and Aesthetics at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Since his return in 1988, he has been writing novels and essays. He has received several awards for his work, including the Heinrich Mann Prize for the essay ‘Der Europäische Landbote’, the German Book Prize for the novel ‘Die Hauptstadt’ and the European Book Prize for the novel ‘Die Erweiterung’.
