Time and again, composer and director Ruedi Häusermann finds astute parallels in Robert Walser's worldviews to what preoccupies him as a person and an artist, as is also the case in his latest theatre production for the Schauspielhaus Zurich. Robert Walser was a master at allowing the seemingly insignificant to grow. He revered hesitant little clouds, dreamy ignorance or thoughtless thoughts, because they were only thoughts, and concluded: ‘The most serious people sometimes have a longing for the freedom of play.’ This is one of the reasons why Häusermann himself will be on stage with his jazz trio and a string quartet, performing and playing together with three actors. The sound of a washing machine here, the murmur of a meticulously executed composition there. Experiencing one within the other becomes a joyful game. Everyday trifles in a city façade made of paper become entangled in thoughts about human existence. ‘Where distance disappears, closeness moves tenderly closer.’ (Robert Walser)
