Antú Romero Nunes was born in Tübingen in 1983 and is of Portuguese and Chilean descent. He gained his first experience in theatre at the Theater Lindenhof. In Chile, he worked as an assistant director in both theatre and film. He completed his studies in directing at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin in 2009. His graduation production, “Der Geisterseher”, after Schiller, was invited to the Radikal Jung Festival in 2010. From 2010 to 2013, Romero Nunes was an in-house director at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. His production of “Die Räuber” was awarded the Friedrich Luft Prize. In 2014, he made his opera directing debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper, followed by more opera productions at the Komische Oper Berlin and the Grand Théâtre de Genève. His production of “Don Giovanni. Letzte Party”, after Mozart/da Ponte, earned him an invitation to the Festival d’Avignon, while “Die Odyssee – Eine Irrfahrt Nach Homer” took him to the Berliner Theatertreffen in 2018. His plays have been presented at numerous international festivals, including in China, Chile, Mexico and France. From 2014 to 2019, Antú Romero Nunes worked an in-house director at the Thalia Theater. He regularly directs productions at theatres including the Schauspiel Frankfurt, the Berliner Ensemble, and the Burgtheater in Vienna. Since 2020, he has been co-director of the Schauspiel department at the Theater Basel. His production of “Ein Sommernachtstraum” in Basel was invited to the 2023 Theatertreffen in Berlin, as was his production of Lukas Bärfuss’s “Die Krume Brot” to the Schweizer Theatertreffen and to the Autor*innentheatertage in Berlin in 2025.
Following “Solaris” (2012), “Alice in Wunderland” and “Peer Gynt” (both 2013), the 2026/27 season will finally see another production by Antú Romero Nunes at the Schauspielhaus Zürich: DER KLEINE PRINZ.
