Makiko Yamaguchi

Makiko Yamaguchi is a dramaturg and translator. She has worked in international cultural exchange, with a focus on theatre and dance. Furthermore, she has acted as a coordinator, curator, interpreter and translator between Japan and German-speaking countries, initially at the Goethe-Institut Tokyo and subsequently at the Japan Foundation in Cologne. She went on to work with a cultural foundation of the City of Tokyo, where she helped to establish an international cultural network. From 2015 to 2020, she cultivated collaborations in contemporary theatre and dance between Japan and Southeast Asia at the Japan Foundation Asia Centre in Tokyo. Since 2016, she has worked regularly in Germany as a dramaturg and interpreter with Toshiki Okada, a playwright and director, in Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Hanover. She was also part of the programme team for Theaterfestival Basel 2022 and a member of the curatorial team for “reEDOcate me! – ein postfossiler Themenpark 2022” in Berlin. Since 2025, she has been working as chief dramaturg of the Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite Tokyo

In the 2026/27 season, she will join the Schauspielhaus Zürich for the first time as a dramaturg on the production DER LAUBBLÄSER.
