Sophia Mercedes Burtscher was born in Bregenz, Austria, in 1990. She first studied theatre and film studies in Vienna, where she also gained her first stage experience at the Burgtheater's Junge Burg. From 2013, she studied acting at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at Goldsmiths University in London. In 2016, she was hired by Schauspiel Köln, where she was a permanent member of the ensemble for six years. There she worked several times with Ersan Mondtag, Frank Castorf, Charlotte Sprenger and Robert Borgmann, among others, as well as with directors such as Lilja Rupprecht, Armin Petras and Stefan Bachmann.
In 2022, she appeared in the main cast of the Netflix series ‘King of Stonks’. She has lived in Berlin as a freelancer since 2023. In addition to theatre work at the Stuttgart State Opera and the Volkstheater Vienna, she regularly appears in film and television and works as a voice actress and singer. She will appear in the new ‘Stromberg’ film in cinemas from December 2025. In the 2025/26 season, she can be seen for the first time at Schauspielhaus Zürich in Pınar Karabulut's production of IL GATTOPARDO.
