Fuka Arai, born in 1991 in Ibaraki (Japan), studied musicology at Tokyo University of the Arts. She then worked in various roles for international concerts and music theatre projects in Japan, including at the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival and the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy. After that, she completed a Master’s degree in dramaturgy at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater «Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy» Leipzig in 2025. Her thesis examined the challenges of international theatre collaboration, using Madama Butterfly by Satoko Ichihara and Theater Neumarkt Zürich as a case study.
She gained further experience as a dramaturgy intern in productions at Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, and the HMT Leipzig. At Schauspielhaus Zürich, she works as an interpreter for the production «Die Bakchen» by Satoko Ichihara, facilitating communication between the Japanese director and the artistic team.
