A play for classrooms, ages 8+
A production by the Junges Schauspielhaus
That’s it! After seven years at the Schauspielhaus Zürich, Hans quits his job as an actor, and sets off in search of his fortune. For his hard work, he is rewarded with a lump of gold so large he can barely carry it. To bid farewell to his audience, he tours classrooms one final time, sharing stories of his adventures featuring animal exchanges, shady encounters, and moments of pure joy.
As Hans steadily loses his possessions, he draws ever closer to his own happiness, though not without stumbling across difficult questions: what things can be valuable even if they cost little? What is the connection between wealth and joy in life? And why is gold distributed so unevenly?
By skilfully combining imagination, critical engagement, and relevance to lived experience, Till Wiebel’s theatre productions manage to both delight and move children, young people, and professional audiences in young people’s theatre. Time and again, the writer and director revisits familiar material, shifts perspectives, and retells it from new angles. At times, young non-professional performers appear on stage; at others, experienced professionals.
Either way, his precise eye for both classic material and contemporary cultural phenomena strikes a chord with young audiences. With HANS IM GLÜCK, Till Wiebel turns the Brothers Grimm classic “Hans in Luck” into an exhilarating one-man show for the classroom.
