Lucia Bihler, born in Munich in 1988, studied directing at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts, and completed a master’s semester in choreography. Her productions are characterised by a distinctive formal language and striking imagery.
Bihler has worked at numerous leading theatres across Germany, Austria and Norway, including Schauspielhaus Bochum, Schauspiel Köln, Schauspiel Leipzig, National Theatre in Oslo, and Schauspielhaus Hamburg. She also regularly directs at the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Münchner Volkstheater. Her stage adaptation of Robert Menasse’s novel “Die Hauptstadt” at the Schauspielhaus Wien was invited to the Radikal Jung Festival in Munich in 2019, as was her production of “Hedda Gabler” in 2020. From 2019 to 2021, Lucia Bihler was an in-house director and a member of the artistic leadership team at the Volksbühne Berlin. She has taught at a number of universities since 2024 and has run the directing masterclass at the Radikal Jung Festival since 2025. Furthermore, Bihler has been invited twice to the prestigious Berliner Theatertreffen: first in 2023 with “Die Einbegorenen von Maria Blut” (Burgtheater, Vienna), and again in 2026 with “Die Welt im Rücken” (Staatstheater, Stuttgart).
She will make her Swiss debut at the Schauspielhaus Zürich in the 2026/27 season with her production of DAS GROSSE HEFT.
