Bernhard Mikeska

Bernhard Mikeska was born in Munich. After studying physics and obtaining a doctorate in theoretical physics on complex systems in Heidelberg and Hamburg, he worked as an assistant director at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg (artistic director Baumbauer). Since 2000, he has worked as a freelance director and producer in the independent scene and at municipal theatres, including the Rote Fabrik Zürich, Gessnerallee Zürich, Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, Theater Chur, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Theater Heidelberg, Residenztheater München, Staatstheater Braunschweig and for the Kunstfest Weimar. Together with Alexandra Althoff and Lothar Kittstein, he has been developing hybrid productions with the new digital medium of virtual reality in the RAUM+ZEIT collective since 2018. His works have been invited to the IMPULSE Festival, the Fadjr Festival Tehran, the Autorentheatertage Hamburg and the Schweizer Theatertreffen, among others. For the hybrid virtual reality production BERLAU :: KÖNIGREICH DER GEISTER (Berliner Ensemble, 2022) he was awarded the Friedrich Luft Prize with RAUM+ZEIT. In 2023/24 he was a Senior Fellow at the Collegium Helveticum (ZHDK/ETH Zurich). He lives in Zurich and Berlin.
