
Mikko Gaestel (born 1982) is a visual artist, filmmaker and photographer who is based in Berlin and Munich. He studied fine art and media at the University of the Arts Berlin, where he graduated as a master student, and then fine arts at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavík. Gaestel’s work lies at the intersection of video, photography, 3D animation and documentary film. He explores hybrid forms of visual storytelling and performance. His debut documentary, ‘The Great Fortune’, won the Grand Prize at the Belgrade International Film Festival in 2016. In 2021, his video performance, ‘ARK1’, developed in collaboration with choreographer Colette Sadler, premiered at Tanz im August in Berlin. Gaestel has worked as a video artist and scenographer on numerous international theatre productions since 2010, collaborating with renowned companies and directors such as Rimini Protokoll, Lola Arias, and the Sasha Walz Company.
