Rafael Sanchez, born in Basel in 1975, was resident director at Theater Basel from 2003 to 2006, where he curated the K6 venue he developed. As co-artistic director at Theater Neumarkt in Zurich, he enjoyed various successes from 2008 to 2013.
Sanchez has worked at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin, the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, the Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Teatro Español Madrid, among others.
In his work, he deals with canonical material as well as new texts and focuses on the precise observation of characters and their perspectives in order to tell their stories in all their facets. His most important works include HIOB, DIE REISE DER VERLOREN, ROMEO Y JULIETA and KÖNIG LEAR. For his solo piece RAFAEL SANCHEZ ERZÄHLT: SPIEL MIR DAS LIED VOM TOT, he and author Eberhard Petchinka were awarded the Hörspielpreis der Kriegsblinden (War Blind Radio Play Prize) and the international Premios Ondas.
From 2013 to 2023, he was resident director at Schauspiel Köln and took over as artistic director for the 2024/2025 season.
