He wanted to become a ghost — that is what the writer Paul Auster told his wife, Siri Hustvedt, shortly before his death. And for her, that is exactly what he has become. Since Auster succumbed to cancer in May 2025, Hustvedt has continued to feel his presence—at once painful and comforting.

In her new book, the great American author processes the loss of her husband and dares the impossible: to bring him back to life.

With GHOST STORIES, Hustvedt returns to the Schauspielhaus for the first time in ten years for a reading hosted by the Literaturhaus Zürich. Ensemble member Karin Pfammatter will read from this exceptional work. A true literary event.

Siri Hustvedt was born in 1955 in Northfield, Minnesota. She studied literature at Columbia University and earned her PhD with a thesis on Charles Dickens. To date, she has published seven novels. She achieved her international breakthrough with WHAT I LOVED. Her most recent publications include THE BLAZING WORLD and MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE. At the same time, she is a prominent essayist. Her essay collections published by Rowohlt include A PLEA FOR EROS, LIVING, THINKING, LOOKING, BEING A MAN, THE DELUSION OF CERTAINTY, and A WOMAN LOOKING AT MEN LOOKING AT WOMEN.
