Riesenhaft in Mittelerde (WT)

Loosely adapted from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
By and with Theater Hora, Das Helmi Puppentheater & Nicolas Stemann & Ensemble

There have already been quite a few artistic connections among Theater Hora, the puppet theater Das Helmi and director Nicolas Stemann – now, a wild three-way collaboration between these artists and ensembles is taking place for the first time at the Schauspielhaus Zürich.

In searching for sources of inspiration, Hora’s players came up with the epochal fantasy saga The Lord of the Rings, in which wizards, hobbits, elves, humans, dwarves and orcs appear, free people and ultimate evil clash. In this chaotic setting, a small yet highly diverse community becomes the last hope for a different future – offering everything needed to get lost in the exuberant game of illusions and dreams.

On the other hand, it is essential to explore along the material the impacts and contradictions of reality. Can the fantasy novel also be read as a spiritual mobilization, or is it rather an anti-war text, in which it is not a matter of who is “the giant” and who is “the dwarf” – but of becoming a community beyond any size and shape?
